john mccain talked about "zero dark thirty." he was saying, look, this movie makes you think waterboarding and torture is how we got the information that led us to osama bin laden. that's not the case, the movie is inaccurate. do you think the academy's perception of politics and the trut of the movie played a role in why she didn't get the nod? >> let's first point out that the movie did get a best picture nomination and a best screenplay nomination and other nods, but i would tend to agree with you that the fact that kathryn bigelow, the director of the movie and one of the producers behind it wasn't recognized this morning does suggest that the controversy around the film did hurt it, yes, i think so. >> you point out the film itself got nominations. was it perhaps more personal, at her? as opposed to political? >> i don't think it's personal at her, although you can't disassociate the film from the director. i think that is some kind of clear signal. jessica chastain, who we interviewed today who was the star of the film and

a lot of defense hawks like lindsey gramm and john mccain are saying if we leave too few troops or no troops it would just let the caliban back in and take control in the race all of the gains the u.s. made over the past decade. -- erase all of the gains the u.s. made it. that is where the debate will be. how many troops stay. host: he spoke about some of the meetings he had. is there anything congress is looking at to try to move the process forward? caller: i know senator mitch mcconnell met with president karzai and then he took a delegation to afghanistan. the chairman of the armed services committee was also in the afghanistan with senator jack reed. i think congress will be weighing in on the debate. in addition to 2014, the more immediate concern is the way that the u.s. gets to 2014. we have 56,000 troops in afghanistan at now. the president has not said how he is going to wind up at whatever no. he is at in 2014, whether a gradual drop down or a like sum in the military has suggested, keeping a significant force there for the fighting season before you begin to draw down troo

john mccain saying he's going to have serious questions about where john brennan stood as far as those enhanced interrogation techniques were concerned dealing with detainees at guantanamo bay and elsewhere, the critics call it torture. you study this closely, peter. >> i think john brennan will be in an interesting situation when he goes to the confirmation hearing because on the one hand, there are plenty of people in the cia who would claim enhanced interrogation techniques are helpful in the war against al qaeda. and so if he says, well, they weren't, that is something that won't go down too well with some of his future colleagues at the agency assuming he's confirmed. on the other hand, you know, if he says that these techniques produced useful information, that may not go down very well with the senate intelligence committee, which after all has publicly said, senator dianne feinstein, the leader of the committee, saying the techniques have nothing to do with how osama bin laden was finally captured. so that's going to be a kind of fine line to kind of walk. and as fran townsend

you know, you listen to people like john mccain, and the idea is you have to continue to invest in a country because we invested all this blood and treasure for all of these years, and it would be wasted. that was the logic of vietnam as well. you can sustain trying to build a nation that many empires have tried and failed before to do so. it's not about karzai anymore. it's not actually about al qaeda. it's not really even about the taliban. it's about pride. it's about the mistakes that have been made and the lives that have been lost. how do you best honor that? >> yeah. >> gail, stay with us, if you can. >>> up next, a preview of "meet the press" with david gregory and "the washington post's" eugene robinson. first bill karins with a check on the forecast. >> we're having our father/son powwow. barnicle is going to control the weather maps. we're going to do the rooerever. >> i'm a high-pressure area. >> yes, you are, hothead. you have to go a little slower. we're confusing people. now we're on saturday already. let's just start with your weekend forecast. you can't go back. that
